The Brazilian mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) is a tree native to the Amazon, belonging to the Meliaceae family. It is a large tree that can reach approximately 20 to 30 meters in height, although mature specimens may grow considerably larger. It generally has a straight trunk, broad crown, and compound leaves.

Its fruit is a woody capsule, usually oval and brownish, which splits open when mature, releasing winged seeds that can be dispersed by the wind.

Mahogany is particularly valued for the beauty, durability, strength, and quality of its wood, traditionally used for furniture, musical instruments, and high-quality finishes. Intensive exploitation has made conservation and sustainable management important for the species.
